Concrete polishing is a specialized process used to enhance the strength and appearance of concrete floors, creating a sleek, glossy finish or a durable l no-grit surface for heavy use. With years of experience and a commitment to quality, ImageWorks uses state-of-the-art equipment and adheres to OSHA standards to ensure every project is completed safely, efficiently, and every floor achieves a professional finish tailored to your needs for a seamless blend of resilience and style.

Why Choose Concrete Polishing?

Concrete polishing is an ideal choice for those seeking a durable, low-maintenance, and visually appealing flooring solution. Whether for offices or industrial facilities, polished concrete offers unmatched resilience and style.

  • Durability: Polished concrete withstands heavy foot traffic, forklifts and other medium service duty machinery, making it perfect for high-use environments. It resists stains and chipping vs regular concrete, and is low maintenance vs coatings in most situations, ensuring lasting performance.

  • Low Maintenance: Polished floors are easy to clean with just a sweep or mop and rarely require refinishing, saving time and effort.

  • Eco-Friendly Solution: Concrete polishing uses the existing floor structure, eliminating the need for additional materials or adhesives. This sustainable approach contributes to green building certifications and reduces environmental impact.

Key Benefits of Polished Concrete Floors

Polished concrete floors combine practicality and sophistication, offering a variety of benefits for a range of applications. By enhancing natural light through its reflective properties, polished concrete can brighten interiors and create a welcoming atmosphere

  • Enhanced Aesthetic Appeal: Polished concrete brings a sleek, modern look to any space, elevating its overall design to enhance the intrinsic appearance of the concrete, or it can be polished to create an exposed aggregate appearance. Stains can be incorporated to add color and visual appeal.

  • Customizable Finishes: Choose from high-gloss, satin, or matte finishes and a variety of concrete stains to complement your space. Polished concrete may be complemented with textured coatings for improved traction in areas where safety is a priority without sacrificing your overall style.

  • Increased Property Value: The durability of polished concrete helps your flooring remain in excellent condition for years, reducing the need for costly replacements or frequent maintenance. Additionally, polished concrete's sleek, professional appearance adds a modern and sophisticated touch, making spaces more attractive to potential buyers, tenants, or clients.

Concrete Polishing Process

At ImageWorks Painting, we follow a meticulous process to deliver professionally finished, durable floors:

  1. Preparation: We clean, level, and repair the concrete surface to create a strong foundation.

  2. Grinding and Smoothing: Industrial-grade grinders smooth the surface, removing imperfections and preparing it for polishing.

  3. Polishing and Sealing: Multiple polishing stages refine the surface to the desired finish. A concrete densifier is applied to significantly harden the concrete for increased durability. This process is finished with 1-2 protective guard coats.

  4. Quality Assurance: Every floor undergoes a thorough inspection to ensure consistency, resilience, and a professional finish.

Concrete Polishing for Commercial & Industrial Applications

Industrial concrete polishing

Polished concrete floors provide practical and stylish solutions for commercial and industrial spaces.

  • Retail Stores, Warehouses, Offices: Durable enough for high-traffic areas, polished concrete demonstrates both functionality and professional aesthetics to your clients and customers.

  • Business Benefits: Its sleek appearance, ease of maintenance, and long lifespan make polished concrete an economical choice for businesses.

  • Industrial Settings: With resistance to chemicals, heavy machinery, and physical impact, polished concrete is ideal for demanding industrial environments.

Types of Finishes Available

ImageWorks is Pittsburgh’s trusted source for concrete polishing. Concrete can be polished to enhance the natural appearance of the concrete, or polished to create an exposed aggregate appearance to meet the specific needs of your space:

  • Glossy Finishes: Achieve a high-shine, reflective surface that adds brightness and sophistication to any environment.

  • Satin and Matte Finishes: Lower sheen options are perfect for when an economic option is needed to provide a durable, easy to clean surface.

  • Color Options: Choose concrete stains with a variety of color options to match your design preferences.

Comparing Concrete Polishing to Other Flooring Options

Polished concrete stands out for its durability, clean-ability, aesthetics, and low-maintenance requirements.

  • Polished Concrete vs. Epoxy Flooring: While both options are durable, polished concrete offers a more natural look and requires less maintenance over time.

  • Polished Concrete vs. Tile and Marble: Polished concrete is more cost-effective, resilient, and easier to maintain than traditional tile or marble options.

  • Why Choose Polished Concrete Over Unfinished Concrete: Unfinished concrete is prone to wear from heavy traffic, reducing its overall lifespan. Its porous surface absorbs stains and oil, and degradation of the soft concrete surface leads to rapid deterioration causing significant dust issues that persist for as long as the floor remains untreated. Polished concrete, on the other hand, offers enhanced durability and a protective finish that not only minimizes maintenance and cleaning costs but also significantly boosts the aesthetic appeal of your facility.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is polished concrete slippery?

While polished concrete can have a glossy appearance, it does have a naturally good slip coefficient offering good non-slip characteristics as long as it is clean, dry and oil free.  In situations where floor will be frequently wet or oily, a textured non-slip coating may be a better choice.

How long does concrete polishing last?
As with all coatings and finishes, the answer to lifespan varies greatly and is directly tied to service level and maintenance. In foot-traffic only environments, polished concrete can last indefinitely with proper maintenance, making it a long-term investment in durability and style. Though with heavier service duty (forklifts, track machines, auto traffic, etc.) the lifespan of polished concrete is shortened, it is not uncommon to see polished concrete last for decades with proper care and maintenance. As long as the floor is kept in good condition, polished concrete can be economically refinished periodically to greatly extend it's service life.
Can concrete polishing be done on outdoor surfaces?
Technically polished concrete may be used outdoors, however in most situations it is not ideal. Wet polished concrete or polished concrete where algae or other organic growth may form could present a dangerous slip hazard. We would normally advise against polished concrete in an uncovered outdoor space.
Is polished concrete suitable for high-traffic areas?
Absolutely. Polished concrete is highly durable and designed to withstand heavy foot traffic, machinery, and environmental wear.
What is the maintenance process for polished concrete?
Polished concrete is low maintenance, requiring only regular sweeping and occasional mopping to keep it looking its best. Occasional (depending on service duty, from 5-15 years) refinished of the final grind step with new guard coats can cost effectively keep your polished concrete looking great for decades.
